You can take any heart, blood pressure, or time-sensitive medications with a sip of water the morning of your procedure. Please DO NOT take medications for diabetes, weight loss or any other medications your physician instructed you not to take. If you have any other questions please contact us at 314-735-0200 opt3.
You do not need to bring your eye drops with you to surgery.
You should stop eating and drinking full liquids (milk, cream, creamer, yogurt, orange juice, prune juice, butter, margarine, pudding, ice cream, and cream soups 6 hours before surgery.
You should stop drinking clear liquids (Water, black coffee (with sugar but no cream), Tea, Clear juices (apple, grape, cranberry), Soda, popsicles, Jello, Broth, Sports Drinks (Gatorade, Powerade), and hard candies 2 hours before surgery.
You can eat and drink as soon as you leave the surgery center. We also do have snacks and drinks for patients upon request after their procedure.
All together expect to be here for 2-3 hours. This can vary and depends on the surgery you are getting and if there are any other uncontrolled delays.
No. We do offer wifi, coffee and vending machines. Drivers must stay on campus for safety reasons.
NO it is not. Please arrive at the arrival time given to you by the physician’s office. This is not your procedure time. The arrival time is built in time we have here to get you prepared for surgery.
You should wait at least 24 hours after receiving sedation before operating a vehicle. If you are wearing a pressure patch, have blurry vision, or if your eyes are swollen after surgery we do not recommend that you drive to your follow up appointment the next day.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Choose a shirt with high-rising sleeves and a loose neck to allow for easy placement of EKG stickers and a blood pressure cuff. For some procedures you may be required to change into a gown. Even so, please still wear loose, comfortable clothing and slip-on shoes. We recommend all of this for ease in dressing after your surgery and for your overall comfort here at Gateway. .
Cataract surgery can typically be performed under monitored anesthesia care (MAC) with topical numbing eye drops, along with a mild sedative given intravenously to help you feel relaxed. Surgery is monitored by an anesthesiologist, who will adjust your IV sedation as needed to keep you completely comfortable.
Yes, you will have an IV inserted prior to your surgery.
You will be laid flat on the operating bed with your head positioned flat and facing the ceiling. The operating room staff will position your body so that you are comfortable for the duration of the surgery.
Your post-operative eye drops are the same eye drops that were given to you (or ordered from a pharmacy) prior to surgery. Follow the drop schedule given to you by the physician’s office. If you have any questions about your eye drops, please contact the office.
