Preparing for Surgery

Before Surgery

Before Arriving

  • You will receive a link via email or text to complete your preoperative questionnaire. If you are unable to complete it online, a member of our nursing staff will contact you. If this is your second surgery, within 6 months, you will not receive a call.
  • Your surgeon’s office will call to confirm your arrival time for surgery.
  • A member of our billing department will contact you prior to your procedure to review your payments/copayments that will be due upon your arrival to the surgery center.
  • Dress comfortably and according to the weather. A light sweater may be helpful during your stay. We recommend wearing loose-fitting clothing and a shirt that buttons or zips down the front for ease of ECG lead placement and IV access.
  • Do not eat anything for 6 hours prior to your scheduled arrival time.
  • You may have clear liquids—such as water, tea, black coffee (with sugar, but no cream), clear juices, or soda—up to 2 hours before your arrival.
  • You may take your heart, blood pressure, or other time-sensitive medications with a small sip of water the morning of your procedure.
  • Please avoid wearing makeup, hair products, or jewelry.
  • Smoking is not permitted on the day of your procedure.
  • A responsible adult must accompany you to the center, stay throughout your procedure, sign discharge paperwork, and drive you home afterwards.
  • If you arrive without a responsible adult, your surgery will be delayed until one is present

Anesthesia

The anesthesia you receive during your surgery will be provided by the Anesthesiologist and/or a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. The anesthesia staff will give you either sedation or general anesthesia and monitor you throughout your surgery. You may receive a separate bill for these services. Please address all questions regarding these services to 314-370-6856.

Day Of Surgery

Checking In

  • You must have an adult bring you to the Surgery Center, stay during the procedure, receive your discharge instructions, drive you home, and remain with you for 24 hours after your procedure. If you don’t have anyone with you at the time of check-in, your surgery will be delayed until your driver is present.
  • Please bring
    • Drivers License
    • Insurance Cards
    • Payment (we do not accept Care Credit)
    • Advanced Directive or Living Will (optional)
  • Please be advised that we are unable to provide exact procedure times in advance. Surgical durations may vary based on individual patient needs and clinical circumstances. As a result, delays may occur if the physician is attending to a complex case or is running behind schedule. We kindly ask that you keep your schedule open on the day of your procedure to accommodate any unforeseen changes. Our team will make every effort to keep you informed and minimize wait times.
  • Please remember we are not affiliated with the doctor office. We are a separate entity and will need all your information.
  • Please be aware that the only food options available on campus are vending machines. We recommend planning accordingly and making any necessary meal arrangements in advance.

PreOperative

  • A preoperative nurse will escort you to a preoperative bay to begin preparation for your procedure.
  • You will be evaluated by the Anesthesiologist or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), who will discuss your anesthesia plan and answer any related questions.
  • Your performing physician will meet with you briefly to review the procedure and address any final concerns.
  • An operating room (OR) nurse will then review any last questions and accompany you to the pperating room for surgery.

After Surgery

PostOp

  • Following your procedure, you will be transferred to the recovery area, where a nurse will monitor you as you awaken fully from anesthesia. Once you are stable and alert, you will be reunited with your designated driver to prepare for discharge.
  • Snacks and beverages are available upon request.
  • You will also receive written post-operative instructions for reference at home.

Emergency

  • If you have a medical concern after your procedure, please contact your performing physician directly.
  • If you are unable to reach your physician or if you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
